Especially When You’re Running a Business
If there’s something that business owners continuously tell me along with friends and family is that I’m one of the bubbliest characters that they know. I always seem to be happy and excited and have a go-getter attitude. That’s what we are going to be talking about today. How do you stay motivated in business? You can be in business for a few days, a few weeks, a few months, a few years, or even a few decades and eventually you feel like there is a bit of fizzle. This doesn’t just happen in business, it can happen in relationships, it can happen with friendships it can happen with anything. But what we need to talk about is how do you stay motivated.
What Motivated Me to Start
Since I was a kid, I have always been interested in business. I was selling things at school around 14 years of age, and I took that interest to the next level when I finished school. I was always just motivated by being able to control my own life. Having freedom is something that the vast majority of people aren’t able to get, but it is something that is truly life-changing.
Now, running a business can also do the opposite. It can consume you, but if you are strategic, you can have the freedom that you never would with being an employee.
Set Goals
A big thing that I find that helps to stay motivated is to set goals. This means setting small goals, medium goals, and big goals. The small goals can be something as simple as, what am I going to do today? What am I going to have for breakfast? Don’t make the goals too hard. Make it something that you can achieve, and make it something that you might not have done the day before. So maybe, you want to wash the car and you just do that, just do it, wash the car, and when you wash the car you’ll feel like you’ve achieved something. That will release dopamine, that will make you happy, and that will make you look at and go “wow, this is great.”

A great example for me, if I’m working in, and working continuously for a long period of time, I find swapping to something completely different, so if you work and you do something very creative, swapping to something that is a bit more laborious, and vice versa if you’re doing something that requires a lot of heavy lifting, try doing something a bit creative or something analytical.
Break Up Your Day
For our business, I’m in front of a computer for long hours every day, so to motivate me and to get my mind pumping, I like doing other things. Maybe I’ll go outside and plant some plants, or I could do something as simple as just running around with the music up a bit louder and just listening to the music and having a bit of a dance.
As long as you’re changing your mindset, even momentarily, it will refresh your whole attitude, especially if it’s something positive that takes you away from it. And the reason why this is important to do is it lets the idea simmer.
Change Your Mindset
Changing your mindset on the way that you are looking at the problem is really important, and that’s why just getting up, having a dance, going for a run, planting a plant, doing something different that steps you outside of the world that you’re in and the job you’re focusing on changes your mindset, changes everything. So it’s really important to do that as well. When you have a list and you go to bed, the idea is still there working away in the background regardless of what you think.

Lists Are Awesome
You can have different lists and categorise them into different types of items. If you’ve got a list of things that may be in your business where you need to do your bookkeeping, you can categorise that. The fun and funky stuff is kind of creative and doing the invoicing thing can somewhat be creative, but you can make into these lists where you have the tasks that are draining, and then you can have the tasks that are creative and that lets you sort of think out of the box.
And all the tasks in your mind are being accomplished at the same time. But some are continuously being accomplished and some are not. Your mind is fantastic at multi-tasking and you’ve just got to continue to remember that. When you have these tasks, they’re in your mind and you’ve actually created some solidity by putting them down on paper, is when the magic starts to happen.
The Final Word
A dream wrote down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan, and a plan backed by action makes your dreams come through. Think about that, and start writing your lists.
