Well, we had such a fantastic response from the previous podcast that we’ve decided to do another one expanding on common mistakes in small business. So we already know remove repetition, step one. Document, step two. Remove objections from your customers, step three. How are you going to have time to do all that? You’re already pretty busy.
If you’ve been in business for a while, you’d know that there are some mistakes that you’ve made. Today, we’ve been asked what are the common mistakes that we see around the traps in small businesses. It’s a great question because we see a lot. Are you using paper? Have you answered the phone in your business recently? Can you monitor what all of your staff are doing and can they reference a document that shows them what they’re meant to be doing? If the answer is no, then you’re making a mistake.

After being in business for a while you hear some crazy stories. I’ve been lucky to be involved in a couple of them, and some of them are bad for business and I’m going to be talking today about how they could have been avoided. One of my favourites is this potential client that called me up and they were still in the process of using our services.
How does the late payment of invoices impact small businesses? Now we’ve all been there. You’ve been in business for a while and someone starts paying invoices late. Everything’s all good to start off with, and then they start paying things late. What’s worse is if you’d have to go out and buy a product to allow for it to be sold. Whatever you’re doing, maybe you’re modifying something and then on selling and you’ve had to fork all that money out for the product.
So, we all make mistakes. What we’re going to be talking about today is maybe something a bit more important than just dialling the wrong number, and that is hiring the wrong person. If you’ve experienced the effects of a poor hire, you know what I’m talking about. It’s a terrible feeling. You grab them on, you already go through all the interviewing process, you’ve gone through Seek, you’ve got 200 resumes that you’ve looked through. You’re resumed out. You could write a book on reading resumes, and no one would read it because it’s boring! But you’ve got there. You’ve gone through the process of hiring and interviewing, and you’ve got the person in front of you, or hired remotely, depending on how your business is set up. And you’ve decided that they are the best person. Then they just don’t seem to work the way they interviewed. They’re obviously really good at selling themselves, but shithouse at performing and bringing things to the table.

In the traditional sense, engagement is when you find someone and you get along so well you decide you’re going to spend the rest of your life with him or her, and so you decided to become engaged. Employee engagement is no different. If you want to know some drivers of employee engagement, this episode is for you.
What are the qualities of a great leader, you ask? Well, this is my opinion. There are lots of things people go on about. Who’s a leader? Are you a leader? We all need to be a leader, everyone needs to be a leader, and that’s probably good. Everyone should be able to be there and collaborate with their peers, their staff members, and everyone. You shouldn’t just be a leader in one area; you should be a leader across all areas. You should be a leader in your life, a leader with your wife, a leader with your kids, but probably not a leader when you get in strife, that wouldn’t work. But, a leader is just someone who people look up to, and that’s what you’ve just got to remember. It doesn’t mean what everyone thinks it means. I couldn’t find a leader on the topic of being a leader. I had to take from my own personal experience.

Look at this geyser. Sorry, I mean this one. That’s Old Faithful, It’s one of the most famous sites at Yellowstone national park and do you know why it’s called Old Faithful? It’s because it’s reliable. Other geological events are hard to predict, but this geyser has been erupting every 44 to 125 minutes. It’s not an exact timetable, but still, you know you’re going to get to see it when you come to the park because it’s reliable. In business, these two ideas have often gone hand in hand. Reliability and faithfulness.
You’ve got this cool, wicked-awesome idea or service that you want to see come into fruition and actually help change people’s lives. You know it’s going to be amazing and you’ve written everything down. You’ve got your SWOT analysis done. You’ve gone, ‘This is going to go gangbusters. It’s going to go nuts.’ Super-exciting stuff. Now, you’re really worried that someone’s going to steal your idea.
